The 2010/2011 school year has begun with the first PTA meeting tonight at 6:30pm and adjorning at about 8pm. The working budget and standing rules were passed with only a few modifications. Our next meeting will be held October 7th at 6:30pm in the Brattain Library. Copies of this meetings minutes, standing rules, and working budget are to be posted to this site as soon as made available.

Volunteers are desperatly needed for the harvest carnival! The theme will likely be Brattains Birthday Party and will be Celebrated on October 29th in the gym. If you'd like to help out please email me at brattainpta@gmail.com or call me directly at 541-221-1205.

We had about 100 family members show up
to taste and collect recipes for quick,

Also, I would like to address the ongoing comments shared by children's parents who are not a part of PTA. Nor have these parents been involved in the past for a variety of reasons, mostly work related. You do not have to attend all the meetings to be a voice in PTA. There are other ways in which you can be a great influence in your child's educational experience. PTA is an organization which works with you (the Parent), teachers and the school district to provide a more positive educational experience for everyone including your child. We help sponsor activities which enrich the educational process for all CHILDREN who attend Brattain and try to do it in a way that INCLUDES EACH child regardless of social economic status. Through your membership dues we are a greater voice when it comes to issues related to your child's future. Mark your calendars for this year's Book Fair: April 16, 17 and 21.

Once again this year, you can buy one book, and get another for free. The Book Fair will be open from 8:30-4 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, April 16 and 17, and from 8:30 to noon on Monday, April 21. Also, the fair will be open from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 17 for Spring into Reading Night.

One person will need to be elected for each position at the next General PTA meeting on May 8th. Any nominations from the floor must be present to accept the nomination. Those listed above have already accepted and need not be present to be elected. So if you've change your mind, you'd better come to the meeting to decline your nomination or you could be voted in!! :)

Thanks to the nominating committee for their efforts and to those that have volunteered to take on a position.

There are also several chair position for things like: Membership, Volunteer coordinator, Harvest carnival, Bingo, Legislation, Family Programs, Reflections (art program),... Additionally there are chair positions to coordinate several events throughout the year. If you'd like to get involved just send us an email or drop in at meetings announced here.

Treasurer opening

Brattain's PTA has an opening for the board position of treasurer. This position is responsible for keeping an up-to-date record of the PTA's financial accounts, paying bills and making deposits in a timely manner, among other duties. Treasure Box fundraiser

Starting this month, we will be starting a fun new fundraiser:
Two Treasure Boxes — one for the first through third grades and one for the fourth and fifth grades — will rotate among the classrooms that bring in the most box tops and soup labels. The Treasure Boxes are full of games and surprises. The winning classes will recieve the Treasure Boxes for one month.
This fundraiser helps raise money for playground equipment, books for students and more.

September PTA meeting

Thank you to all who made it to Thursday's PTA meeting! We had a wonderful turnout and some great discussion on our budget for the upcoming year and a fun fall fundraising idea — a cookbook with recipes from students. We also elected a slate of new officers for 2007-08.

Open House!!

From my limited perspective, open house was a thrilling success. Fruit sundaes and root beer floats played center stage to T-shirt sales and escrip explanations. We signed up nearly 30 new people with escrip which means that when those 30 people shop at Safeway for the groceries they buy any way, Brattain PTA gets a percentage of everything they spend. Free money! Doesn’t cost you anything, doesn’t cost us anything! Why is this so cool?! It means fewer fundraisers to support school field trips, artist in residence, assemblies, and other fun programs for our kids. If you’d like an escrip sign-up sheet to take home to grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, co-workers, just leave your email address in a comment below or email us at brattainpta@gmail.com. I’ll send you an attachment of the form or we’ll arrange delivery another way. The more people signed up, the less we have to ask you to sell stuff like Sponge bob clocks, boxes of candy, or buckets of cookie dough; which by the way, please make it to the first PTA meeting Thursday September 20th at 6:30pm in the Brattain school library to help decide what fundraisers we’ll be doing this year as well as voting in the new slate of officers, approving the working budget and the standing rules for the coming year. Look for these to be posted sometime this weekend.

Leadership Camp

Oregon PTA offers leadership training several times a year throughout the state and yesterday was our opportunity for local leadership training. We had four of our volunteers attend, two for the whole day and two for half a days training. My training is intended to prepare me for the treasurer position; Jay Thornhill attended the President/VP for new comers training; Felicia Espinoza and Deedee Wagner arrived in time for the region meetings, legislative updates, and an explanation of the new federal nutrition guidelines. We all then attended an inspirational training on programs. The "what, how, why's" of the programs we put together for our kids, that included brainstorming ideas for programs that could be developed for mock scenarios. No competition (my group did the best! :), just good fun and good practice for thinking creatively to create programs that serve our kids.

There will be a more in-depth look at some of the things to look for from our legislature this year, and a report on the new federal nutrition guidelines in another post.

Springfield PTA Council intends to offer other local training opportunities, for anyone interested just leave us a comment below or email us at brattainpta@gmail.com. There will also be extensive training and networking opportunities at the Oregon PTA Convention held every year in April. Four days of classes, networking, recognition, fundraising research, and good fun!

Welcome back!

The 2007-08 school year is here! Welcome back to Brattain!

Brattain's PTA will hold it's first meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the school library. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. Membership in the PTA, which costs $9 per individual, is encouraged but not required. Your involvement is what is important.

Tentative agenda for the Sept. 20 meeting includes a vote for this year's PTA board and standing committee positions. If you are interested in serving on the PTA board this year, please post a comment, call the school office at 744-6380 and leave your name and phone number, or email brattainpta@gmail.com. There will also be discussion on upcoming events and fall fundraisers. An agenda for the meeting will be posted on this blog site in the near future.

Oregon PTA Leadership Camp

The Oregon PTA is sponsoring a leadership camp Sept. 8 at the Springfield School District's Administration Building.

Who should attend leadership camp? Current elected leaders, potential future leaders and everyone who has an interest in how a PTA operates. You'll receive basic PTA training as well as attend workshops designed to help your PTA's parent and school community become involved your school.

How did the Picnic Go!?

Thanks to all the parents and children who showed up for the potluck get-together on Friday. We had a wonderful time visiting, eating, and meeting new people. Honalei gave tours of our school garden, while many childen enjoyed playing on the playground. Not much work got done, so plan on voting for board members on September 20th. Welcome to the 2007/2008 School Year!!

The first day of school is fast approaching and there is much to be done! We have tentatively planned a pot luck meeting on Brattain's playground Friday August 24th at 5:30pm. Bring your favorite side dish, chips, fruit or dessert. PTA is providing hotdogs and drinks so plan on bringing at least your appetite! Email or post an RSVP so we can plan for attendance and provide enough hotdogs.

During this meeting, we will be exploring the various Board Positions available for the upcoming year, and will be accepting nominations and inquiries from anyone interested in taking a part in making this year better than ever! We will hold a general meeting Septemer 20th, at 6:30pm in the Brattain School Library, where we will have a final vote for this year's Board and Committee Positions. If you are interested in giving back this year, please plan to attend. There are numerous opportunities to be involved.
